The City of Norwich Fire Department is a combination fire department. Under the command of Fire Chief Jan Papelino, 1st Assistant Chief Dale Smith, Career Fire Captains, and Volunteer officers. The department responds to an average of 3000+ calls annually for assistance. Career and Volunteer staff train and respond together providing emergency and non-emergency services for the City and Town of Norwich, as well as surrounding communities under the county fire mutual aid agreement.
The City of Norwich Career Firefighters, IAFF Local 1404, are cross trained and NYS/National Certified Basic and Advanced Life Support medical services. Providing Emergency Medical Services for the City and Town of Norwich, the Towns of Preston, Plymouth, and North Norwich, and continued assistance to surrounding areas under county EMS mutual aid agreement.
The City of Norwich Fire Department operates three Engines each with 1000 gallons of water, one Pumper/Tanker 1800 gallons, one Heavy Rescue, one 105 foot Aerial, Four NYS Certified ALS Ambulances, one Command vehicle, one 4x4 Utility vehicle(multi-purpose), One 4x4 Utility vehicle outfitted with a wildland fire suppression unit, one utility trailer with one UTV equipped for off-road wildland firefighting and victim removal, one utility trailer outfitted with highway safety and miscellaneous equipment.
